Cretul: Legislature could kill Indian gambling deal; continue freeze on turkeys posted by Orlando Sentinel on Aug 12, 2009

House Speaker Larry Cretul, R-Ocala, today left open the possibility that legislators could meet in a special session not to rubber-stamp a Seminole gambling deal — but to reject it……

A few other tidbits from Cretul’s gaggle with reporters:
* Cretul said there’s likely to be a one-year extension on the turkey freeze in Tallahassee.
Turkeys are a legislative tradition: House and Senate members file funding requests for local projects, such as landscaping jobs, water improvements and social service grants. A healthy number are usually funded, but few made it into this year’s budget due to the state’s severe deficit. Don’t expect money to be any looser, Cretul said.
* Cretul said he’s tapping Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, to conduct a “high-altitude” review of state government to identify systemic and process changes.
Florida TaxWatch is reviewing state government for cost savings. Cretul said he’s hoping Tax Watch and legislators can identify “efficiencies, where they can be found, maybe some systemic and process changes. I know it’s a high-altitude description, but that’s on our radar screen. I’m going to ask Rep. Bogdanoff to be very involved.”
